Great take, especially the point about O abusing xenia, given what happens to the suitors. Does the line have any relationship to Fragment 94 of Alcman?

thank you! and that is a good question - unfortunately I haven't read enough Alcman to comment, but maybe you are on to something? (you would probably be better tracking down a lyric specialist though, its a little out of my depth!)

no he definitely isn't innocent! perhaps homer intended the cyclops' massacre to mirror odysseus' later massacre of the suitors, where he becomes the monster?
